Glasgow Disabled Scouts

Welcome to the website of the 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scout Group. This website has been designed to keep current members, visitors, parents and supporters up to date on our latest activities and achievements. Check out our latest news section or find out about the individual sections which make up the Scout Group.

The 77th Scout Group provides adventure and personal development for boys aged 8 to 25 with physical disabilities and life limiting conditions. We have a Cub Pack, Scout Troop, Explorer Unit and Scout Network, all of which meet on Monday evenings in the south side of Glasgow. We have no set ‘catchment’ area – in fact, the only geographical restriction is the time it takes to get to us!

Please take a few moments to look through our site, and drop us an email if you want to get in touch with us!

Network Spring Weekend

Our Network Scouts held their Spring Weekend Camp at Lapwing Lodge on 13th/14th/15th April. This is their story of the camp! (PS. read their summaries at the very bottom!)

We arrived on Friday at 7pm and settled in by choosing our rooms for the weekend. We then split into three groups and kicked off our transport theme by building small cars. Each group had a different way in which their car should move- wind, push or wind-up. Half way through building our cars we had rather filling supper of pizza and chips. We then completed our cars and headed to bed.

On Saturday we woke early, had a speedy breakfast and made an early departure from camp at 9:30am. Our first stop of the day continuing with our transport theme was the new Transport Museum. Whilst at the transport museum we looked at all the displays, went down the ‘old streets’ posed for lots of pictures and had an early lunch.

After this we headed off to Scotstoun Leisure Centre for an afternoon swim. We were able to section an area of the pool off just for us and whilst Aidan and James done some lengths the rest of the Scout Network went to work in trying to soak Kerrie and Iain as much as possible, despite them not being in the water !!

After a very long swim we eventually got back on the buses for our journey back to lapwing. When we arrived back we all spent some time customising our cars whilst the scouters set up the Top Gear inspired race tracks. We then got to work racing our cars around these tracks and it was a very close race! All 25 of us then sat down to a lovely three course meal.

For desert we had a ‘create your own’ setup, where a wide range of ingredients were available and we were able to layer up whatever tasty and sometimes unusual concoctions we desired. In the evening we wrapped up warm and headed out into the dark and raining night for a very loud and enjoyable campfire. We came back exhausted and ready for bed.

On Sunday thankfully the sun was back out and we were able to enjoy the entire morning outside. We first had a Scouts Own where both Iain and Douglas spoke to us about the importance of helping others no matter who we are.

After this it was off to archery, some of our members who were on their first weekend camp had never tried archery before so we all took turns helping them and giving them advice. We also watched the leaders compete and laughed when they were all beaten by Keira – the only girl in the competition.

Before lunch we had a quick fire lighting challenge. Kerrie had frozen some coins in a block of ice and we had to build a fire and return the coins to her. There were four groups and some good hearted rivalry. The team to build the biggest fire the fasted didn’t win in the end as they lost their coin in the ash and spent the majority of the challenge searching through the ashes for the coin ! In the end Anthony and Christopher’s team won and returned their coin first.

Due to the great weather our morning activities slightly overran so after a quick lunch we all got packed up, loaded the sunshine coach and headed home.

My favourite part of camp was…

Anthony – I loved archery in the sunshine.

Christopher – I enjoyed swimming the most as I got to splash everyone.

John – My favourite part of the weekend was the fire lighting challenge.

Alan – I liked watching Iain leading us during his campfire song, it was really funny.

Chris – I enjoyed making the cars. It was great to see them being made and race very well, despite being made out of a random collection of everyday objects!

James – I loved the Riverside Transport Museum and liked given Iain a tour as he had never been before
