An Introduction to Summer Camps

This factsheet offers some brief information on the annual Glasgow Disabled Scout Summer Camp. Please contact us if you would like any further information.

Who we are...

Glasgow Disabled Scout Summer Camps are organised by the 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scout Group with financial assistance from the Glasgow Disabled Scout Fund, which is a Charity Registered in Scotland: SC008726.

Our Vision...

Through our annual Summer Camp for Scouts with physical disabilities from any Scout Group in Greater Glasgow, we offer challenge and adventure. We passionately believe in helping our participants to fulfill their potential by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves.

What we do...

Every year we take over forty physically disabled Scouts aged 11-25 on a week long camp. This is completely under canvas - which is quite a logisitical challenge in itself! In past years we have camped in France, Norway, Switzerland, Eire, Holland and all over Scotland.

Our Camps follow a normal Scout programme, with some adaptations to ensure that every participant can get the most out of the experience.

The camps allow the participants to experience adventure but also give the parents and carers of these young people a real chance of respite.

A Summer Camp to Aberdeen

In 2008...

In 2008, we celebrate 75 Years of Scouting with the Disabled in Glasgow. This is quite a milestone in our history, and, to mark this event, we will hold a special summer camp at Gilwell Park, London.

We will travel to Gilwell Park on specially adapted coaches which can take up to 10 wheelchairs each. We will camp in tents for the week, and will organise a full week of activities during camp.

How much do these camps cost?

Due to the high level of disability and the inevitable logistical challenges which follow, the cost of each camp is very high. We have a policy of never turning away any young person on account of money, and also have to subsidise all of our helpers and leaders and a number of Scouts. The total cost of camp in 2008 will be over £35,000 - which equates to around £350 per person.
